Trio of Moves Solidify Atlanta’s Roster

The Gladiators Make Two Trades and Add Former ECHL Defenseman of the Year to Active Roster

The Atlanta Gladiators announced Tuesday that they have added defenseman Matt Register to the active roster, traded Zach Yuen to the Idaho Steelheads in exchange for rookie defenseman Cole Martin, and acquired forward Patrick D'Amico from the Colorado Eagles.

The Gladiators Add Matt Register to Active Roster

Register, 26, had his rights acquired by the Gladiators earlier this summer to complete the trade deadline deal that sent Garry Nunn to the Ontario Reign in March of 2015. The Calgary, Alberta native has been inactive this season after signing with Atlanta on September 23rd due to immigration issues that did not allow him to work in the United States. Before joining the Gladiators, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound defenseman spent the last three seasons with the Reign in which he registered 32 goals and 75 assists in 144 games played in Southern California.

During his tenure in Ontario, Register was named to the All-ECHL First Team in 2014 and 2015 along with being awarded the ECHL Defenseman of the Year honors in 2014. The fifth year pro was second on the team in playoff scoring with 18 points in 19 post-season contests last season in the Reign’s run to the Western Conference Finals.  Register also skated in six AHL games for the Chicago Wolves in 2014-15 posting four assists.

Atlanta Swaps Defensemen with Idaho, Sending Zach Yuen to Steelheads for Rookie Cole Martin

Martin, 21, skated in 15 games for the Steelheads this season where the rookie notched three goals and two assists for five points.  Prior to beginning his professional career this year, the 6-foot, 170-pound defenseman played 280 games over four seasons for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

In his final season with the Rockets, the Arlington, TX native ranked third among the team’s defensemen with 29 points and earned a WHL leading plus/minus rating of plus-61. In Martin’s last three years in Kelowna he registered 96 points and a plus-163 rating combined between the regular season and playoffs.

Yuen, 22, appeared in 17 games for Atlanta this season.  The Vancouver, BC native ranked second on the team in points by a defenseman with eight and complied a minus-2 rating.  The third year pro played a grand total of 52 games and tallied 24 points for the Gladiators dating back to last season.

Gladiators Acquire Forward Patrick D'Amico from the Colorado Eagles for Cash Considerations

D’Amico, 21 and in his first season of professional hockey, has played in 17 games for Colorado and amassed 4 points. The Winnipeg, MB native was a member of the WHL’s Regina Pats over the last three seasons.  The 6-foot, 210-pound forward posted 75 points in 160 games played in his time in a Pats jersey.

All three new additions to Atlanta’s roster are set to join the Gladiators immediately in preparation for this weekend’s games on the road in Orlando, FL vs. the Solar Bears on Saturday and Sunday.

The game’s first goal was scored by Atlanta with just over two minutes gone by in the game.

Garry Nunn worked the puck up to the top of the left circle, faked a shot and then slid to the middle and whistled the puck through traffic past the screened Everblades goaltender, Anthony Peters. Thomas Frazee and Zach Yuen both received assists on Nunn’s first goal of the season.

The Everblades quickly answered back with a powerplay goal 4:40 into the opening period. After some quick passing on the right side, a Branden O’Donnell blind pass out front led to an easy tap-in score for Kevin Lynch for the Everblades’ first goal of the contest. Matt Marquardt tallied a point with the secondary assist which gave him his seventh point of the season to increase his league lead in that category.

Todd Fiddler retook the lead for the Gladiators with help from the Nathan Condon who raced down the center of the ice off and received a seam pass from Derek Nesbitt creating a two-on-one for the Gladiators. Condon drew the defender to him and slid the puck to Fiddler who buried it into the back of the net on the one-timer to take the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period, the Gladiators increased their lead to 3-1 early in the third stemming from the speed of Condon down the middle of the ice. The product of the University of Minnesota blazed his way past the Everblades defenders finding the captain, Nesbitt, in the slot for a wide-open back door goal at 3:06 of the third period. Nunn, who tallied the secondary assist, and Nesbitt notched their second points of the evening on the play.

Mike Aviani narrowed the gap to make it a one-goal game with exactly five minutes left in the third period. The North Vancouver, BC native tapped in the rebound after Gabriel Desjardins fed Mark Nemec, whose initial shot was saved by Atlanta’s goaltender Andy Iles. The goal was the second notch for Aviani on the year.

Kevin Albers sealed the win for the Gladiators with a late, empty-net goal from inside his own blue line. With the win, the Gladiators recorded their first victory of the season and improved their record to 1-1-1 for a total of three points on the young campaign. The Everblades fall to 3-1-0 on the year and stay at six points after four games played.

Nunn Rejoins Gladiators

The Atlanta Gladiators announced Wednesday that forward Garry Nunn will be back with the organization after agreeing to terms for the 2015-2016 season.

“I’m really excited to come back to where I truly believe is one of the best places to play in the whole league here in Atlanta,” said Nunn. “In addition, the team Coach Brandt has assembled is without a doubt going to make an impact this season and I want to be a part of it.”

Nunn, 25, Started the 2014-15 season with the Gladiators scoring 44 points in 55 games played.  In March, Nunn was traded to the Ontario Reign for the final 15 games of the regular season where he would compile 21 points, the most of any Reign player in that time span.  The 5-foot-9, 175-pound forward was the leading scorer for the Reign in the playoffs as well amassing 21 points in 19 games played in route to an appearance in the ECHL’s Western Conference Finals.  In 287 career ECHL games, the Victoria, BC native has registered 194 points with Alaska, Atlanta (formally Gwinnett) and Ontario.  Nunn was a member of the Alaska’s 2010-11 Kelley Cup Championship team and has produced 39 points in 47 career professional playoff games.

“Garry is a huge addition to our team in that he brings a lot of leadership, playoff experience and a great track record of winning,” added Brandt.  “Nunn not only adds a ton of skill and offensive punch to our group of forwards, but also brings an unrivaled work ethic night in and night out who will once again be an integral part of our lineup.”

In addition to his time in the ECHL, Nunn has a year of European professional hockey under his belt as the forward spent the 2013-14 season in Italy’s Serie A, the top professional hockey league in Italy. In 42 matches for the Hockey Club Valpellice, Nunn managed 18 goals and 32 assists for 50 points.  Prior to his professional career, Nunn skated three full seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Vancouver Giants and Edmonton Oil Kings.  While appearing in 180 WHL games, Nunn collected 52 goals and 80 assists.

“I feel that this team is not only going to get into the playoffs but has a legit shot at making a deep run at a championship,” added Nunn.  “I look forward to being a leader on this team and using the experience I have gained in the past to help the Gladiators win the Kelley Cup.”
